An interministerial meeting to examine the state of roads and waste management in Yaoundé
Chaired on Thursday October 26, 2023 by the Prime Minister and Head of Government (PM/CG), Joseph DION NGUTE, this meeting was an opportunity to examine the problems of advanced road deterioration and the accumulation of rubbish in the capital. From the outset of the meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, the PM/CG noted that "road infrastructures in certain parts of the city... are in a state of advanced decrepitude, which is not in keeping with the city's expected reputation". Célestine KETCHA COURTES, Minister of Housing and Urban Development (MINHDU), justifies this situation by citing the ageing of existing roads, which deteriorate further during the rainy season, demographic pressure and lack of regular maintenance. To remedy the situation, the PM/CG has ordered the urgent rehabilitation of existing roads by the Communauté Urbaine de Yaoundé (CUY). The MINHDU suggested that this would require financial mobilization, which could be reduced by using non-imported materials that are cheaper than bitumen. With regard to the accumulation of household waste, the government had opened up the sector to new operators. Under the coordination of the CUY, the involvement of the Communes d'arrondissement has been solicited.
