Africa's most livable and workable cities in 2023

A view of the Palais des Sports Polyvalent in Yaoundé

Port-Louis in Mauritius and Victoria in the Seychelles lead the ranking, with the best quality of life indices on the continent. These cities are closely followed by Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa. The other five cities in the Top 10 are Rabat and Casablanca in Morocco, Tunis in Tunisia, Windhoek in Namibia and Gaborone in Botswana. Among Cameroonian cities, Yaoundé and Douala are absent from the Top 20 and occupy 28th and 29th positions respectively in the 2023 African ranking (out of 47 African cities ranked). Commenting on this ranking, Investiraucameroun.com notes that the country's two main cities have each dropped three places in the ranking compared with 2019, when Yaoundé was ranked 25th in Africa and Douala 26th. As a reminder, this ranking is established on the basis of some forty criteria divided into 10 different categories. These are: political and social environment, economic environment, socio-cultural environment, medical and health considerations, schools and education, public services and transport, urban infrastructure, leisure, consumer goods, housing and, finally, the environment. Criteria that foreigners often rely on when deciding to move to a new country.
