Fish: The scarcity of certain species on the market

A CONGELCAM fishmonger

For some weeks now, certain varieties of fish have been unobtainable, or when they are available, they are sold at a premium. These are specifically the most well-known and consumed species, notably golden mackerel, which has become rare, and when it can be found, a carton costs at least 40,000 FCFA. Carp, once sold at 1,000 - 1,200 FCFA by braiseuses, now sells for 1,500 FCFA and upwards. This situation contrasts with the current situation at the port of Douala, where 665 containers of fish products have been parked for several months. Awaiting removal, CONGELCAM is demanding that this step be preceded by an inspection of their contents. According to information recently made public, CONGELCAM has imported almost 3,000 containers in four months, i.e. 80% of the quantity of fish it would have imported in 2021 and 2022 cumulatively. Around 700 would be the object of the quarrel. Francis EYALA, President of the National Consumers' Network of Cameroon, believes that "nearly 2,300 containers, some of them rotten, have left the port and may have been dumped on the market".
