Crusade against irregular migration of Cameroonians to Belgium

Audience at the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MINAT)

Visiting Cameroon as part of a mission to prevent the real dangers of irregular migration to his country, Freddy ROOSEMONT, Director General of Belgium's Aliens Office, gave a press conference yesterday in Yaoundé. He expressed his indignation at the culture of forgery observed in the processing of applications for student visas and asylum. He was referring to forged diplomas and, above all, student visa applications submitted by non-students. According to statistics, there will be more than 400 asylum applications in 2021 and more than 800, i.e. twice as many, in 2022. By 2023, the number of "unjustified" asylum applications for a stable, democratic country like Cameroon will have passed the 1,000 mark, according to Freddy ROOSEMONT. People who use irregular procedures to stay in Belgium are liable to severe penalties. In addition to an order to leave Belgian territory, they may be banned from entering the country for several years. This would prevent them from traveling to or staying in other European Union countries.
