Digital projects to raise the rate of registration of civil status documents in the 420 centers in Cameroon

The National Civil Status Office (BUNEC)

We could therefore be satisfied with the rate of birth registration of children under 05, which rose from 66.1% in 2014, according to the multiple indicator cluster survey carried out by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), to 70% in 2020, according to the operation to collect vital statistics data carried out in 2019 by the National Civil Status Office (BUNEC). Cameroon's national civil status system, which remains manual, does not yet allow each Cameroonian to be given an indisputable civil identity, and the State to produce reliable statistics, an essential instrument for planning and steering public policies. . To remedy this situation, computerized management of civil status is envisaged. This is where the processes of "indexing" and "digitalizing" civil status records come into play. In this regard, particular attention is paid to: the systematic implementation of the national civil status master plan with the support of the European Union. The success of these pilot projects should lead to the generalization of the digitization of the 420 main civil status centers in Cameroon, i.e. 374 centers located on the national territory, and 46 operating in diplomatic missions and consular posts abroad. .
