Key figures to understand the African Day for Decentralization and Local Development (JADDL)

The 9th African Day of Decentralization and Local Development will be celebrated on Monday August 10, 2020 in our country. On this occasion, Mr. Georges ELANGA OBAM, the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development (MINDDEVEL) will preside at OKOLA not far from Yaoundé the closing of activities related to JADDL at 11 am. On August 10, 2012, celebration of the 1st edition of the African Day for Decentralization, Local Governance and Local Development under the theme “Financing of decentralization, provision of public services and local development”.

Year 2000 establishment of the "African Conference on Decentralization and Local Development (AMCOD)", a common melting pot, which aims to promote decentralization and local governance in member states. The Headquarters of the Permanent Executive Secretariat of AMCOD is based in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

AMCOD became in 2007 the Specialized Technical Committee of the African Union (AU) in matters of decentralization and local governance. It is in this capacity that the 20th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from January 23 to 27, 2012, instituted by Decision EX.CL/Dec. 677 (XX) the celebration of an African Day of Decentralization, Local Governance and Local Development every year on August 10.

Since 2014, African Heads of State and Government have adopted the African Charter of Values and Principles of Decentralization, Local Governance and Local Development. This charter recognizes the Territorial Collectivities as privileged partners of the national Governments in the promotion of the well-being of the populations.
